Landlords could face extra costs of up to £188 million over the next ten years if new laws requiring private landlords to check their tenant's immigration status are passed.

According to Mortgage Solutions magazine, the government's impact assessment found the cost of familiarising landlord and lettings agents with the new rules could cost as much as £54.8 million.

The scheme is set to cost landlords and the Home Office around £256.5 million over ten years. It is predicted there will be around 650 penalties handed out to companies, letting agents and landlords.
