The private rental sector has been growing in recent years and it is at its highest level since the early 1990's, figures from the Department for Communities & Local Government show.
The English Housing Survey explains that the number of private tenants, 3.84 million, now outnumbers the 3.8 million living in social housing. In 2011-12, around two-thirds (65%) of households were owner occupiers. Also, half of all private renters (1.9 million) were aged under 35 with 15% (577,000) aged 16 to 24 and 35% (1.3 million) aged 25 to 34.
