Lloyds Banking Group retained its title as the UK's largest mortgage lender in 2012, although its market share and gross lending figures both dipped. Gross lending fell from £28bn in 2011 to £26.2bn in 2011, while its market share reduced marginally from 19.8% to 18.3%. The six largest lenders - Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society, Barclays, HSBC, Santander and Royal Bank of Scotland - all reduced their lending in absolute terms, falling from £117 billion in 2011 to £111 billion last year. Both Nationwide and HSBC strongly grew their lending (by 24%). The other four all shrank their new business volumes, most significantly Santander which saw a planned contraction in gross lending of 38%. August 30, 2013
