The size of the typical mortgage taken through the Help to Buy mortgage guarantee scheme has fallen by 7% since the end of last year, according to figures from Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

RBS said its average mortgage fell from £158,055 in December to £147,330 in April. In the south-east of England the figure fell from £204,680 to £190,728.

The lender received a total of 9,932 applications up to April 17 and 4,358 of them completed. Approximately three-quarters of applicants were from first-time buyers.
