The Times - Eight big lenders raise mortgage rates

Homeowners are facing higher mortgage payments after eight leading lenders put up mortgage rates. 

NatWest, Santander, HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, Nationwide, Halifax and TSB all increased rates this week in response to the rising cost of borrowing. 

Aaron Strutt from the mortgage broker Trinity Financial said: “There have been a lot of mortgage price hikes this week and some lenders have pushed up their rates a fair bit. We are at the stage where some of the banks have put their rates up twice this week, which is quite unusual. The mortgage market is going through yet another period of instability.

“There are still two and five-year fixed rates available well below 5 per cent but they are rapidly disappearing.”
