Getting a mortgage has become a tick-box exercise with nervous lenders taking a ‘computer says no’ attitude to the less standard cases. 

Aaron Strutt, of London-based mortgage broker Trinity Financial, explained the building societies are often more attractive than banks as they tend to be more flexible on how long a loan can last.
