Mortgage Strategy - Brokers divided over timing of base rate increase

Brokers are split in their forecast for when the Bank of England will raise the base rate, after it kept the benchmark rate at 0.5 per cent for the 65th consecutive month.

Trinity Financial product and communications manager Aaron Strutt says the timing of an increase is less predictable.

“When anything is kept in the same place for 65 months straight, it becomes very difficult to predict when the change will finally come.

“We’ve heard Carney and other MPC members say a base rate increase is coming sooner rather than later but that still gives very little basis for an accurate prediction.”
