Sharp rise in workers going self-employed
Two-thirds of the new jobs created since the financial crisis have been for people becoming self-employed, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows.
Approximately 732,000 of the 1.1 million jobs created since the start of 2008 are accounted for by self-employed workers, taking the total number of self-employed borrowers to 4.6 million. Records show this is the highest amount over the last 40 years.
Aaron Strutt, product manager at Trinity Financial, says: "Securing a mortgage can be a complicated process for newly self-employed borrowers, particularly as the lenders expect to see accounts and trading history. Trinity has access to a handful of lenders accepted one year’s self-employed accounts, although most banks and building societies prefer to see two-year’s accounts."
