Government figures show that its Help to Buy mortgage guarantee and equity loan schemes have helped more than 66,000 homebuyers since April last year.

Over 80% of Help to Buy sales were to first-time buyers, with 54,000 being helped onto the property ladder. The vast majority of properties were outside of London and cost below the average national house price.

Since the scheme was introduced the number of lenders offering low deposit mortgages has increased significantly, to the point where there are now 69 lenders offering 90-95 per cent loan-to-value rates.

Many of the high-street banks and building societies are still offering generous affordability calculations. For example, it is still possible to borrow between four and five times both single and joint salaries.
