The average price of property has exceeded £200,000 for the first time, data from the latest Halifax House Price Index shows.

The bank says that house prices in the latest three months (April-June) were 3.3% higher than in the preceding three months (January-March). The quarterly rate of change picked up following two successive falls, pushing the average price of a UK house or flat to £200,280.

Prices in the three months to June were 9.6% higher than in the same three months a year earlier. This was higher than May’s 8.6% and the highest since September 2014 (9.6%).

However, the figures are not in line with rival lender Nationwide. Last week it said annual house price inflation has fallen to 3.3% in June, bringing the average price to £195,055.
