Labour leader Ed Miliband has called for the national regulation of private landlords and lettings agents. In a speech to the Fabian Society, Mr Miliband was quoted as saying: “We would introduce a national register of landlords and greater powers for local authorities to root out and strike off the rogues. “Most people who rent have responsible landlords and rental agencies. But there are too many rogue landlords and agencies either providing accommodation which is unfit or ripping off their tenants.” According to research by LSL Property Services, the total amount of late or unpaid rent in England and Wales in December was £326 million and this represents 10.1% of all rent. The average cost of renting a home also fell by 0.9% to £734. January 18, 2013
